Scarborough, Ontario – May 25, 2024 – National Filipino Heritage Canada (NFHC) warmly welcomed a diverse group of esteemed guests, beloved friends, and cultural sponsors to the Scarborough Civic Center on May 25, 2024. This gathering marked the beginning of a historic celebration of Filipino heritage for June, a testament to the unity and diversity that defines our multicultural Canada. The event, a vibrant fusion of Filipino culture with the rich tapestry of Canada, brought together a diverse array of talents, artists, entrepreneurs, and community leaders, fostering a sense of inclusivity and belonging.

The event was graced by the esteemed presence of Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, Members of Parliament Mrs. Salma Zahid, Mr. Shaun Chen, and Hon. Marco Mendicino, and Consul General Angelica Escalona of the Philippine Consulate in Toronto. Their attendance added a touch of prestige to the occasion, making our esteemed guests and the entire audience feel truly honoured and valued.

The event’s speeches were designed to inspire and touch on several important themes. They highlighted the resilience of the Filipino community in challenging times, the strength that diversity brings to our society, and the significance of kindness as a cultural legacy. A particularly notable moment was the recognition of June as Filipino Heritage Month, a celebration that resonates from coast to coast in Canada, symbolizing the deep-rooted connection between the Filipino and Canadian cultures.

NFHC took a momentous opportunity to express its heartfelt appreciation to several non-profit organizations for their exceptional contributions to humanitarian services and community engagement. Through their selfless efforts, these organizations have made a profound impact on the community, enriching the lives of many. Among those recognized were:

The Felix Y. Manalo Foundation, Inc.: The foundation, an integral part of the Iglesia Ni Cristo (Church of Christ), exemplifies solidarity and civic responsibility through volunteer work and philanthropic endeavours, particularly in addressing poverty.

Pueblo Science: A Toronto-based charity dedicated to advancing science education (STEM) and fostering innovation in low-resource communities, founded by University of Toronto Professor Dr. Cynthia Goh and alumna Dr. Mayrose Salvador.

The Filipino Canadian Dental Hygienists’ Society: Engaging with the community through various activities, including health education and free dental clinics, this society advocates for health equity and provides essential dental care services.

The Sine Institute: Focused on cultivating and leading a community of Philippine excellence in creative endeavours, the institute champions a holistic approach to filmmaking and storytelling.

One of the standout moments of the event was the screening of a one-hour documentary crafted by Marie and Paul Arevalo, shedding light on the indomitable spirit and resilience of the Filipino diaspora in realizing their dreams and aspirations.

The documentary featured interviews with notable personalities such as Dr. Patrick Alcedo, Edsel Mutia, the Caleon Twins, Noreen Ocampo, Jillian Joy San Juan, Corie Laraya-Coutts, Michael Masangkay, and many more, who brought smart perspectives to the Filipino Canadian diaspora.

But the celebration doesn’t end there! Everyone is invited to Albert Campbell Square on Saturday, June 29, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. for an immersive journey into the heart of Filipino culture. From captivating live performances by home-grown talents to the rhythmic beats of traditional music and the grace of folk and contemporary dances, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

What truly makes this event special is the mouthwatering array of Pinoy delicacies awaiting everyone. Indulge your taste buds in the flavours of the Philippines, from savoury classics to sweet treats that will leave everyone craving more.

NFHC’s vision is to empower individuals of all ages to deepen their connection with Filipino culture globally. Through meaningful stories, critical thinking, artful experiences, and innovative entrepreneurship, NFHC aims to present Filipino culture in contemporary Canada as robust, vibrant, and forward-thinking.
